Sightseeing & Activities

When thinking of the Lake District most people think of Windermere, England’s longest lake set majestically amidst the most breath-taking scenery in the Southern Lakes. The village of Windermere sits at the edge of the stunning Lake District National Park and is a favourite with tourists and visitors. Lake Windermere is a paradise for any water sport enthusiast and is always buzzing with activity whatever the weather. The Windermere Steam Boat Museum is a perfect family day out, as is the visitor centre at Brockhole.

However, within a 5 minute walk you can be having fun on Segways, hiring electric bikes or having a go at archery. www.lakelandsegway.co.uk/

Kendal is the largest town in the Southern Lakes and offers everything the visitor needs, excellent shopping, restaurants, cafes and bars. Local pubs selling locally brewed ales and home produced fare offer a warm welcome. Wandering around the town you will discover endless attractions, sites of historical interest, art galleries and museums to explore. Sample the famous Kendal Mint Cake and maybe take some home with you.
No trip to the Lakes would be complete without a boat ride, a gentle trip across Windermere by ferry to the quaint and very picturesque village of Hawkshead, where you can meander amongst the traditional whitewashed cottages nestled between the little cobbled streets and find your own piece of paradise. There are equally stunning boat trips to be had on Coniston, Ullswater and other lakes in the area.

There are water activities (zorbing), canoeing, rowing, skiing available on most of the lakes. Horse riding is a great way to unwind and see some of the beaches and woodland in and around the area.

Throughout the year there is an endless programme of activity in the Southern Lakes, festivals, fairs, drama, dancing, markets, steam gatherings and shows fill the streets of the towns and villages of Cumbria with life.

Artists and poets have always found inspiration in such surroundings, the never ending tranquil beauty of the countryside, the dramatic backdrop of the mountains, the gentle comings and goings of village life and the hustle and bustle of the towns makes the Southern Lakes the perfect place to visit

In Cartmel you’re never more than 20 minutes away from one of these activities.  Visit the following websites to see just our near we are to them.
